Is a Recovery House Right for You?

Detox and counseling in a rehab center is the most effective way to get sober, for anybody who has been a victim of addiction. But then, what is the most effective way to stay sober after rehab?

Staying sober is especially difficult for those first beginning their new life after rehab. Without participating in an ongoing treatment program, relapse is almost unavoidable. There are many options for sober living programs, and it is very important to choose the option most appropriate for your individual needs… the program that will best help you to become self sufficient with living sober.

A recovery house is not always the best option for everybody. If you are able to return home, to work, to rebuild relationships, and confident/willing to stay sober on your own… then you should not consider a recovery house. Instead, you should speak to your counselor about sober coaching. (A sober coach extends your preventative treatment while giving you the most freedom to make your own choices.)

Recovery houses are more appropriate for severe cases of addiction, or unwillingness (or an inability) to stay sober on your own. Recovery houses provide a residential extension of your rehab treatment. A recovery house can be temporary or permanent, based on your individual needs.

Recovery houses offer additional programs (such as career training and job placement) that will help you build a better life. The restriction against relapse is only one way that recovery houses help prepare you for a life of living sober.

Most recovery houses offer amenities (such as a game room, swimming pool, exercise room, and/or hiking trails) that will provide positive activities to occupy your time with. When you are ready to leave a recovery house, it’s always a good idea to continue pursuing exercise and other positive activities. For those with low income, you can contact your local YMCA about a scholarship (subsidized membership.)

An important element of sober living is the food you eat. If a recovery house is the best option for you, you should look for a recovery home that includes nutritious meals. The food you eat will help you become stronger, healthier, and happier… all the way around.

What to Expect from a Recovery House

A recovery house is an addiction recovery support program, and the only kind of support program that matters is one that will help you to become self sufficient. So you should expect a recovery house to be a temporary milestone in your journey to sober living.

You should expect to get the most for your money with a recovery house, which means you want top of the line care with a high success rate. You want to be comfortable, and you want to actively pursue the goal of living sober… without help.

You should also consider the other residents in a recovery house before choosing which home to reside in. Your potential roommates will also be your support partners, and it’s important that you be able to relate to at least one other individual.
