Substance Abuse Intervention

If somebody you care about is struggling with substance abuse, an intervention is the best thing you can do for them. The worst thing you can do… is nothing.

By the time there is a need for a substance abuse intervention, you will have the need to stand up and confront the individual for your own reasons, but it is very important not to rush into a substance abuse intervention.

In order to reach its full potential of effectiveness, a substance abuse intervention should:

Include as many people as possible. You should never have a substance abuse intervention by yourself, because everything you say will likely go in one ear and out the other. Friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers should all be asked to participate. The more who join in, the better!

Be carefully thought out, planned, and organized. While there should always be room for flexibility, a substance abuse intervention has to have some order to it. There are many reasons why this is important, including the fact that the addict will notice others have been discussing his or her behavior for some time and this will bother them.

Be monitored, or even guided, by a substance abuse intervention specialist. Somebody who has experience with interventions can help those participating in the confrontation be prepared for any defensive attacks, as well as help focus on the right things to say.

Provide valuable information about the effects of substance abuse. And compare this information to real life examples.

Never be “softened up.” The purpose of a substance abuse intervention is a combination of approaching somebody who is struggling with alcoholism or drug abuse, and also the chance to relieve your own self of any unnecessary stress. Be as honest and blunt as you can, or you won’t feel any better and you won’t get the full point across.

Does somebody you know need a substance abuse intervention?

It is not as difficult as you think it may be to tell if somebody is in need of an intervention for substance abuse. Basically, if you are reading this article and thinking of somebody in particular… that person probably is in need of a substance abuse intervention.

If alcohol or drug abuse has created problems in somebody’s life, including work and relationships, then it will only get worse until you stand up to them. Being a good friend means that sometimes, you have to “call somebody out” on their actions and let them know they are messing up. This is what you do when you care about somebody, and a substance abuse intervention is the only way that somebody (who is controlled by addiction) will listen to what you have to say, and take you seriously.

Also, if somebody who is abusing drugs or alcohol has caused pain in your life, usually by betraying your trust… then a substance abuse intervention is necessary.

The most important thing about a substance abuse intervention is to encourage positive behaviors and decisions. When an individual is ready to get sober, help them by supporting the right decisions that will ensure a successful recovery.
